In February 2011, Google announced the Panda update, which penalized websites that contained content copied from other websites and sources. Historically, websites would copy each other's content and improve their search engine rankings through this practice. However, Google implemented a new system that penalized websites whose content was not unique enough.
The 2012 Google Penguin algorithm attempted to penalize sites that used manipulative techniques to improve their search engine rankings. Although Google Penguin was described as an algorithm designed to combat web spam, its real focus was on spammy links, by measuring the quality of the sites from which the links came.
The 2013 Google Hummingbird update introduced an algorithm change designed to improve Google's natural language processing and semantic understanding of web pages. Hummingbird's language processing system fell into the newly recognized category of "conversational search," which paid more attention to each word in a query to better match pages to the meaning of the query, rather than focusing on just a few words. Regarding SEO changes, for content publishers and authors, Hummingbird was designed to solve problems by getting rid of irrelevant content and spam, allowing Google to produce high-quality content and rely on them as "trusted" authors.
In October 2019, Google announced that it would begin applying the BERT model to process English search queries in the United States. BERT is another attempt by Google to improve natural language processing, but this time to better understand users' search queries. In terms of SEO, BERT aims to make it easier for users to connect to relevant content and improve the quality of traffic to ranked websites in search engine results pages.

Bing, and Yahoo!, all use crawlers to find pages as part of their algorithmic search results. Pages linked from other search engine indexed pages do not need to be submitted, as the system will automatically find them. The Yahoo! Directory and DMOZ were two major phone number thailand directories that closed in 2014 and 2017, respectively, and both required manual submission and human editorial review. In addition to the URL Submission Console, Google also offers the Google Search Console, which allows the creation and submission of XML sitemap feeds for free to ensure that all pages are found, especially those that cannot be discovered through automatically followed links. Yahoo! previously operated a paid submission service that guaranteed crawling on a cost-per-click basis; however, this practice was discontinued in 2009.
